How to get more Google reviews as a tradie.

Plenty of happy customers will leave a review if you ask at the right moment and make it one tap. Here is how to ask, what Google's rules forbid, and how to answer the reviews you get.

Ask the same day

The best moment is right after the job, while the customer can still see the new deck or the working hot water. A week later they have moved on.

Ask in person, then send the link by text the same day so it is sitting in their messages when they have a minute.

Make it one tap

Your Google Business Profile gives you a short review link and a QR code. Open your profile, choose to ask for reviews, and copy the link. Put it in the text message, on your invoice and in your email signature. Every extra step loses people.

What Google's rules forbid

Google's review policy is strict, and breaking it can get reviews removed. Don't:

  • Offer anything for a review, such as a discount, a gift card or a free service.
  • Only ask the happy customers. Google calls this selectively soliciting positive reviews. Ask everyone.
  • Write reviews for yourself or have family and staff post them.
  • Pressure people to review while you are standing there, or tell them what to write.

Read Google's prohibited content policy for the full list.

Answer every review

Thank people by name and mention the job: "Thanks Sarah, glad the new switchboard sorted the tripping." Future customers read the replies.

For a bad review, reply once, calmly, with what you did or will do to fix it. Don't argue in public. A fair answer to a complaint often reassures the next customer more than another five stars.

Let the system ask for you

Asking after every job is easy to forget at the end of a long day. On Care Growth at $1,000 a month, WebGecko sends the review request after each paid job and keeps your Google Business Profile posting, so the asking happens without you.

More questions tradies ask

Questions before you start

Can I offer a discount for a Google review?

No. Google's policy forbids offering anything in exchange for a review, and reviews collected that way can be removed.

Can I ask only my happy customers?

No. Google treats selectively asking for positive reviews as a policy breach. Send the same request to every customer.

How do I get my Google review link?

Open your Google Business Profile, choose to ask for reviews, and copy the short link or download the QR code.

Do more reviews get me higher on Google Maps?

Google lists reviews among the things it considers for local results, but nobody can promise a ranking. More recent, genuine reviews also help customers choose you once they find you.
