Overview
GeoTag Photo ("the app") is made by WebGecko for Windows, iPhone, iPad and Android. This privacy policy covers all of them. The short version: we collect nothing.
The app works on your device. It doesn't need an account or login. The only things it sends over the internet are the coordinates or place names it needs to look up, described under Place names below, and on Windows a license check.
What we do not collect
- No personal information (name, email, address)
- No photos or image data — all processing happens locally on your device
- No location data — your photos' GPS is read on your device; only the coordinates needed to name a place are sent to OpenStreetMap (see below), without anything that identifies you
- No device location — the app never uses your phone's GPS or asks for location permission
- No usage statistics or analytics
- No crash reports or telemetry
- No advertising identifiers; on Windows, only the anonymous Machine ID needed for license validation
- No cookies, trackers, or third-party SDKs
Your photos
All photo processing happens on your own device. Your images are never uploaded to WebGecko or anyone else. The app reads the GPS and date from a photo's EXIF data and draws the label onto a new copy — your original photo is never changed.
iPhone, iPad and Android: the app can only see the photos you choose (with the system photo picker, or by sharing a photo to GeoTag Photo). It asks to add photos to your library only so it can save the tagged copies. If a photo's own file has no location or date, the app may ask to read that one photo's details from your library. When you share a tagged photo, it goes only where you send it.
License activation (Windows)
Only the minimal data needed to check a license is involved:
- A hardware-derived Machine ID (an anonymous code) is generated locally on your device. The app sends it to our license server at webgecko.au when it starts and once a day, to check whether this computer is licensed. No photos, file names or personal details are sent.
- If you purchase, payment is processed by Stripe — see Stripe's privacy policy for their data practices. The Machine ID is passed to Stripe so the purchase can be linked to your computer.
- Your email address is used solely to send your license receipt.
Our license server keeps only what it needs to check licenses: the Machine ID, the license type and its status (for example active or cancelled).
Place names
To turn a photo's GPS coordinates into a place name, the app sends those coordinates to the Nominatim service run by OpenStreetMap. When you use Look Up a Place, the text you type is sent there too. Nothing else is sent — no photo, account, name or device identifier. Results, your Look Up history and your settings are kept only on your device. Without an internet connection the app uses a built-in list of towns instead and sends nothing. See OpenStreetMap's privacy policy and the Nominatim usage policy.
Subscriptions on iPhone, iPad and Android
Pro and Commercial subscriptions are sold and managed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). WebGecko never sees your payment details, name or email address. The app only learns from Apple or Google whether a subscription is active. The 7-day free trial is tracked on your device.
This website
This website (webgecko.au/geotag-photo) uses Google Analytics only if you accept it in the cookie banner, to count visits. If you decline, no analytics cookies are set. The app itself never uses analytics.
Children's privacy
GeoTag Photo is not directed at children under 13. We do not collect any information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If our privacy practices ever change, we will update this page with a new date. Given our zero-collection approach, we do not anticipate any meaningful changes.
